Bennelong Funds Management (Bennelong) today announced its Australian small companies capability, through a partnership with Avoca Investment Management (Avoca).
Avoca is Bennelong’s newly established boutique investment manager, majority-owned by John Campbell and Jeremy Bendeich. John and Jeremy, who have been on ‘gardening leave’ since leaving UBS on 4 April this year, said they were thrilled to finally launch the business. “When thinking about an optimal work environment, we were seeking a structure that would allow us to be nimble and proactive, but with the strength and backing of a very professional support team. Bennelong provides us with a solution that will allow us to completely focus on delivering quality investment outcomes for our clients,” said John, Managing Director of Avoca Investment Management.
Jarrod Brown, Bennelong Funds Management’s Chief Executive Officer said, “We’ve been looking at expanding into the small caps sector for some time. Having invested many, many months in researching various options, we are excited to announce our partnership with John and Jeremy. Not only are they highly proficient in their field, but they possess the business acumen and cultural fit which complements our own values and drivers.
John Campbell has a wealth of asset management experience, having spent more than 20 years in a variety of roles within the industry including Portfolio Manager of the UBS Australian Small Companies Fund, and Director of Equity Research Sales at Credit Suisse First Boston.
He has worked in a broad range of roles within the industry including equity analysis, trading and sales at various financial institutions including Maple-Brown Abbott, Bankers Trust Australia and JP Morgan Private.
Jeremy Bendeich has over 10 years of experience in the wealth management industry. Most recently, he was Portfolio Manager of the UBS Australian Small Companies Fund, and an investment analyst at Colonial First State covering the small caps market, as well as large cap telcos, utilities, infrastructure and property trusts.
He also worked as an Associate Analyst at Smith Barney Australia Securities where he was responsible for transport and aviation equities research.
Michael Vidler joins John and Jeremy with whom he worked with while at UBS, analysing and reporting for the Australian Small Companies Fund.
Michael has over 10 years of asset management experience, the majority within trading and analytic roles. Most recently, he was employed as Associate Portfolio Manager with UBS working on their Australian equity portfolios. His professional history includes working at Colonial First State as an analyst for the group’s index funds, where he was responsible for management and analysis of asset allocation as well as back-up portfolio management. He also held the roles of Performance Analyst and Adviser Services Officer whilst at Colonial.
Commenting on the addition of Bennelong’s new investment team, Jarrod Brown said “While each of our investment teams is distinctly unique in their methodologies and niche expertise, what unites us is not just the drive to outperform benchmarks, but a strong social and community agenda, which is actualised when a portion of our profits is channelled into the Bennelong Foundation”.
